Transformers are installed mostly outdoors, making them prone to moisture and water seeping into the oil. Moisture is one of the primary contaminants of oil which results in breakdown and failure of most transformers. It reduces the ability of transformer oil to prevent electrical breakdown (dielectric strength), increases the chances of short circuits by making the oil conductive, causes bushings, core, and windings to rust, and impacts the ability of oil to dissipate heat from core and windings. When moisture reacts with oil, it forms acidic liquid and sludge on its parts which further corrodes the components. Moreover, the dehydration is better than replacing the oil because it is economical. Replacing the oil requires more labour, capital and more downtime of power supply. How We Dehydrate Transformer Oil
Transformer dehydration can be done through various methods like hot air blowing, hot oil spray, cyclic drying, etc. But vacuum purification is the most reliable method. In this method, we use a vacuum pump to create a vacuum in the dehydration chamber where oil is contained, lowering the boiling temperature of water. The water is removed by boiling and collecting it in a condenser.
